Doves in the Window is a beautiful quilt block with squares, triangles and rectangles. If you've mastered those three, you will have no problem with this quilt. It is quite simple. That doesn't mean it's not time consuming. Any time you have that many triangles, it takes time; time to square up all your triangles. Below is how you start constructing this block. After sewing four of these sections, you sew a rectangle in between two of these pieces and repeat. Then you sew a rectangle with a square and add the last rectangle. Sew this in between your other two pieces and you have your block. Alright now for the magic! Notice in the quilt block the black fabric in the half square triangles. Now look at the black fabric when all four blocks are sewn together. It makes it look like the white fabric triangles are sitting on a wide band of black fabric. What what happens when I put this quilt on its side. Now it really brings out the black band with the thinner white band, like double crosses. That's the magic of sewing these quilt blocks together that I love.
I did a little research and found a free pattern you could use. Just click on the link below. http://www.mccallsquilting.com/qb/mccallsquilting/pattern_407/index.html I also found Delaware Quilts Block of the Month you might enjoy. http://delawarequilts.com/BOMs/DoveInTheWindow/index.html I hope you have enjoyed "Doves in the Window" quilt block and will give it a try! Carolyn I have been busy creating "Lovie Lap Quilts" with pockets for your Dad or Grandfather. What a unique gift for Father's Day. These are one of a kind quilts with pockets to keep their hands warm and another pocket for items they like to have close at hand. Here is the Nautical Lap Quilt with beautiful pictures of lighthouses and boats. I love the variety of pictures. You can almost hear the waves breaking on the rocks. I have free motion quilted waves on the center of this quilt. The second lap quilt is called "Gone Fishing". I think I see a theme here. Is your Dad a fisherman? This quilt has two different boats and several different fish on the border.
For a while now I have wanted to do a whole cloth quilt. After meeting Leah Day in New Hampshire at the MQX Quilt Festival and seeing her Goddess of Love quilt, I just have to make one. I came up with the idea of making a quilt with a Peacock design. I went on Pinterest and looked up all the Peacocks I could find. Then I drew out what I wanted. I auditioned several fabrics and decided on a batik with blue and pink. This fabric is already making me nervous. I think it might be too busy. I drew the design onto the fabric. I also wanted to have some parts of the pattern pop so I did some trapunto. Trapunto is also new to me so I googled it and found a few different videos. In some of the videos they suggest using water soluble thread. I didn't have any so I used my free motion quilting thread.
This is the start of the quilting. This is going to be a long process. I'm not going to be able to work on this continuously, for one, it would get too boring and for two I am running my business and need to my baby quilts and "Lovie Lap Quilts". I'll let you know when I have more to show! Happy Quilting.
It was so exciting yesterday to go to the MQX Quilt Festival in Manchester, New Hampshire and meet Leah Day. Leah has been my inspiration not only in free motion quilting but also in owning her own quilting business. She and her husband, Josh are so easy to talk with. They are both very giving of their time and talent. Leah is most known for her Free Motion Quilting Project. http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com Below is part of a whole cloth quilt Leah has just finished. The white is all thread. What talent! The quilts at the MQX Quilt Festival were amazing. Below are some of the highlights. Last night Leah Day was names "Machine Quilting Teacher of the Year". Congratulations, Leah!
Here is another great example of what you can do with half square triangles. Sugar Bowl consists of squares and half square triangles. Of course, the most important thing about half square triangles is squaring them up. That helps you get your points perfect. I say "helps" because sometimes no matter how hard you try, they are still not perfect. But that's okay.School Girl's Puzzle is another great quilt block from my favorite quilt book, "Around the Block with Judy Hopkins". When I look at this block, I see fish! Maybe that's because I just finished a nautical quilt for someone. This is just a three fabric quilt. I used a busy floral and leaf print fabric that gives the quilt a modern feel. The second fabric is a soft peach and the third is a white on white print. The quilt block is not difficult, you have half square triangles, squares and triangles.I used the School Girl's Puzzle quilt block to make a soft and sweat baby quilt. I think the quilt could have a totally different look if you used more solid fabrics. You could also use four fabrics to add contrast. I hope you give this block a try. What a fantastic quilt block. Nautilus is not difficult to make but you must be sure to square up each time you sew on another piece. It's like a spiral going around and around. You just keep adding on your next piece. It's a lost like sewing a log cabin block but instead on straight pieces, you are sewing on triangles.I was going for a specific look with this quilt. I wanted a soft pastel quilt. The effect was really great; however, you can make a very dramatic quilt with the pattern if you use one light color fabric with one dark color.Choosing these fabrics was not comfortable for me. I knew I wanted the quilt to look soft, but it was stepping out of my comfort zone to use such a variety of fabrics. I truly love the results. I also had a lot of fun with the free motion quilting.
How do you say goodbye to your Mom. I lost my mother 11/25/14 after a four year battle with a rare blood cancer. You never even new she was sick with the exception of her being tired. She wasn't one to complain. Mom showed such strength and determination. She would question the doctors and fight for more information about her disease.
