Doves in the Window, Quilt Block 115!

Doves in the Window is a beautiful quilt block with squares, triangles and rectangles. If you've mastered those three, you will have no problem with this quilt. It is quite simple. That doesn't mean it's not time consuming. Any time you have that many triangles, it takes time; time to square up all your triangles.

Below is how you start constructing this block.

After sewing four of these sections, you sew a rectangle in between two of these pieces and repeat. Then you sew a rectangle with a square and add the last rectangle. Sew this in between your other two pieces and you have your block.

Alright now for the magic! Notice in the quilt block the black fabric in the half square triangles. Now look at the black fabric when all four blocks are sewn together. It makes it look like the white fabric triangles are sitting on a wide band of black fabric. What what happens when I put this quilt on its side.

Now it really brings out the black band with the thinner white band, like double crosses. That's the magic of sewing these quilt blocks together that I love.

Here is the Nautical Lap Quilt with beautiful pictures of lighthouses and boats. I love the variety of pictures. You can almost hear the waves breaking on the rocks. I have free motion quilted waves on the center of this quilt.

My Dad loved the ocean and taught us to have a great appreciation of it's beauty.

I've Been Inspired by Leah Day!

For a while now I have wanted to do a whole cloth quilt. After meeting Leah Day in New Hampshire at the MQX Quilt Festival and seeing her Goddess of Love quilt, I just have to make one.

I came up with the idea of making a quilt with a Peacock design. I went on Pinterest and looked up all the Peacocks I could find. Then I drew out what I wanted. I auditioned several fabrics and decided on a batik with blue and pink.

This fabric is already making me nervous. I think it might be too busy. I drew the design onto the fabric. I also wanted to have some parts of the pattern pop so I did some trapunto. Trapunto is also new to me so I googled it and found a few different videos. In some of the videos they suggest using water soluble thread. I didn't have any so I used my free motion quilting thread.

I am in the middle of cutting away the extra batting. I used two layers of Warm and White cotton batting. In the video, they told you to be careful cutting the batting away because you could cut your fabric. Well, yes, I did that too. I had to make a patch to fix that problem.

This is the fabric I chose for the back of the quilt. I won't be surprised if I end up using this for the front. Both sides should be just as pretty. We'll see.

If you look closely, you can see the little patch at the bottom left. You shouldn't be able to notice it when the quilting is all finished.

This is the start of the quilting. This is going to be a long process. I'm not going to be able to work on this continuously, for one, it would get too boring and for two I am running my business and need to my baby quilts and "Lovie Lap Quilts".
