Another wonderful quilt block from "Around the Block with Judy Hopkins". Gentleman's Fancy is a lot of fun to make and watch come together. In Judy's book, she has this block made with just two fabrics, a light and a dark, which actually makes the block pop more than what I chose to do. I went with a softer look. This certainly isn't a hard block, but I wouldn't recommend it for your first quilt. It is a little more involved than just your basic block. As always, you have to square up each piece as you sew, making sure all your points are where they should be. I used the Gentleman's Fancy quilt block to make a "Lovie Lap Quilt" with pockets. I am moving along on my adventure of making 200 quilts from my favorite quilt book, "Around the Block with Judy Hopkins". Quilt block 89, Cat's Cradle was a fun block but more involved. You would not want to try this if you are a beginner, but great for an intermediate quilter. It's not a hard block, but has a lot of points that you want to match. Cat's Cradle is supposed to be made with just two fabrics, a light and a dark. I chose three fabrics. I don't think I ever do things the way they are supposed to be done. I always feel the need to put a twist on them. I made a "Lovie Lap Quilt with the Cat's Cradle quilt block. You can click here to see more "Lovie Lap Quilts". On to quilt block number 90!
You can fool your friends with the Greek Cross quilt block. It looks more complicated than it is. The center is a square. The blue and off white rectangles are done by strip piecing (very easy). Then you have the half square triangles in each corner. I like the secondary design the quilt makes when you sew all four blocks together. I have taken classes on Craftsy with Leah Day on free motion quilting. If you have any interest in learning free motion quilting, Leah Day is fabulous! Notice the feathers I did on the off white fabric. I challenged myself with these feathers going around in a circle and I am pleased with the results. The fans in the corner came out nicely as well. I have had more practice with those. I tend to use them a lot in my quilts. I made a "Lovie Lap Quilt" with pockets using the Greek Cross quilt block. Click "Lovie Lap Quilts" to see more.
