Block Number Six of 200 from "Around the Block with Judy Hopkins"

Block number six is called Paper Pinwheels. It is a simple block to make, just squares and half square triangles. I chose batik fabrics, my favorite fabric to use. Here is a sample block:

Okay, now for my favorite part and why I am creating all 200 quilt blocks from the book, "Around the Block with Judy Hopkins". When you put four blocks together... SURPRISE you get another pattern. I have to admit I didn't see it coming. I didn't know you would get a repeat of the center pattern. Here it is.

Notice that the pink fabric now gives you the same design as the light blue fabric. That's what makes quilting so exciting. So I made a "Lovie Lap Quilt" out of this pattern. Lovie Lap Quilts are quilts I designed after visits with my grandmother in the nursing home. They have two pockets, one to keep your hands warm and the other for items close at hand. Lovie Lap Quilts with Pockets

I visit my grandmother in the nursing home once a week. I usually spend four to five hours with her. She doesn't have alot of interest in doing as much as she used to, so we sit and talk and look at old pictures. She tends to get cold from just sitting so I designed the "Lovie Lap Quilt with Pockets" to keep her hands warm. The pockets are lined in flannel for extra warmth and the back of the quilt is also flannel. The quilt size is approximately 30" x 30", a comfortable size for her lap without being too big or dragging on the floor. I also put another pocket in the lap quilt for my grandmother's tissues and chap stick. She is always looking for tissues. Bear

This lap quilt was such a big hit that I decided to turn it into a business. I have made lap quilts with Cats, Irish, Patriotic, Floral; you name it and I can probably find a fabric for it. I have made several for the men as well. My grandmother's quilt is a nautical theme because she and my grandfather lived on the coast of Maine for many years.

Lap Quilts with fidgets

After visiting my grandmother in the nursing home, I observed alot of the patients figiting with different items. I made a lap quilt with different textured fabrics. I also put a piece of elastic with beads strung across the pocket giving them something to fidget with. The quilt has a pocket for their hands to slip in with two other pockets, one for tissues and one for a chap stick. I found these two items were what my grandmother was always looking for. I have been donating the quilts to see how they like them. I have already made some changes. At first I had put the pocket opening on top but my husband suggested the pocket opening on the sides so your hands could slide right in. I am going to start selling these lap quilts on my site for $48.00.
